The Delhi-NCR region’s air pollution problem is by now a well-documented and visible fact. In a recent national survey on air pollution undertaken by Edelman India on behalf of Shakti, Delhi residents displayed high levels of awareness of air pollution and its issues. What was surprising, however, is the number of misconceptions around the issue. The Survey, “A Hazy View” posed a wide range of questions on the subject of air pollution awareness, perceptions and attitudes across 11 Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Patna, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Gwalior, Kolkata, Varanasi and Lucknow.

RESOURCES FOR THIS INITIATIVE
  • Public awareness, perceptions and attitudes on air quality in urban India
  • The Survey, “A Hazy View” posed a wide range of questions on the subject of air pollution awareness, perceptions and attitudes across 11 Indian cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Patna, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Gwalior, Kolkata, Varanasi and Lucknow. Nationally, the respondents tend to come from an educated background and are male by a very clear majority. A majority of the respondents across cities claim to be reasonably aware about air pollution, with Delhi respondents proclaiming themselves to be the best informed. However, the survey reveals that across cities, the levels of understanding/knowledge appear to be lower than claimed.
