The study highlights the success of the UJALA program in creating a large market for LED bulbs using the no-subsidy, bulk procurement model. Domestic manufacturing of LED bulbs has increased, efficiency standards are being implemented, accredited testing laboratories have grown and consumer awareness has increased. An important recommendation emerging from the study is that the program should target low-income households and small commercial establishments who are still buying incandescent bulbs. These and other findings emerging from the assessment can help increase the program’s effectiveness as well as aid the design of similar future programmes in India and abroad.
