Distribution companies (discoms) perceive that solar procurement from rooftop systems is costly. They are also worried about the grid balancing challenges with a huge number of decentralized units. In addition, there are several other systemic issues in the power distribution sector. It was thus important to address these concerns to enable discoms to contribute to and support the national rooftop SPV target. Accordingly, this initiative was designed to analyse the actual impact of rooftop SPV systems on discoms, and propose solutions to promote a healthy equation between prosumers (producers of SPV and consumers of power), discoms and other varied consumers.

    Year 2015

Ensuring access to reliable energy is a major challenge faced by India today. So far, both government and non-government initiatives to meet electricity and non-electricity energy needs in rural India have had a limited impact, especially in relation to quality, quantity and affordability of services. Policy and decision-makers in the Government are needed to be informed about the performance of existing energy delivery mechanisms so that are able to take corrective action. With this in mind, Shakti has supported an initiative for developing energy access indicators for six energy-deprived states of the country. Outputs of this initiative will support the Government to design better policies and programs for energy deprived consumers.

    Year 2014

Research on decentralized renewable energy (DRE) has lacked perspective from practitioners. Under this initiative, rural energy practitioners have systematically identified critical themes relevant to DRE in India. Each theme is presented in the form of a briefing paper. Shakti has collaborated with Ashden India Renewable Energy Collective (AIREC) – a group of grassroots project implementation agencies, individuals and winners of the prestigious Ashden awards (distinguished contributors to rural energy access) - to prepare the briefing papers. All papers in the series are essentially thinking and working papers. Readers are welcome to provide feedback, which will help inform and also shape future strategies.
