The Government of India has ambitious plans to scale up renewable energy, and stakeholders are deliberating cost-effective ways to integrate a largeever increasing quantum of renewables with the power system. A challenge being faced today is the lack of robust data on renewable energy, which confines limits the understanding ability of stakeholders to explore develop solutions. The current data regime is weak because of which it is difficult to gather obtain information on major trends and growth trajectories, market outlook, bottlenecks to deployment and procurement of renewable energy. This initiative attempts to bridge this gap by compiling robust and accurate data on renewable energy from multiple sources and disseminating it through a comprehensive web-based portal, “All About Renewables”. Data from this portal has been assimilated into a special report to present an annual review of India’s renewable energy sector.

Distribution companies (discoms) perceive that solar procurement from rooftop systems is costly. They are also worried about the grid balancing challenges with a huge number of decentralized units. In addition, there are several other systemic issues in the power distribution sector. It was thus important to address these concerns to enable discoms to contribute to and support the national rooftop SPV target. Accordingly, this initiative was designed to analyse the actual impact of rooftop SPV systems on discoms, and propose solutions to promote a healthy equation between prosumers (producers of SPV and consumers of power), discoms and other varied consumers.

    Year 2014

The system operators have to ensure reliability and security of the electricity grid. Hence they must know the quantity and quality of electricity being injected into the grid by all sources of electricity, at defined intervals of time. Renewable energy, a relatively new entrant to India's power system, has increased exponentially in the past few years. This increase in variable generation has led to issues in integrating it with the power system. Scheduling and forecasting of the RE generation is presently being discussed and debated in India, to be able to manage the system effectively.

This initiative aims to inform these discussions through systematic analysis of sample data, existing regulations, practices and codes in India as well as international experiences.
