India is the sixth largest producer of passenger vehicles in the world. Car sales are increasing by leaps and bounds and have surged ahead of bigger markets like China, Brazil, and Europe. By 2050, the country is expected to top the world in the number of cars on the roads. This could mean a huge pressure on our fuel sources as well as on the air quality. In order to pre-empt this, the Transport programme is supporting the government to put in place stringent fuel efficiency norms or standards for new fleet of vehicles.Towards this, the Transport programme is supporting the Standards and Labelling Programme of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to increase efficiency of new vehicles fleet. It is also advocating for increasing the fuel efficiency of existing heavy duty and commercial vehicles fleet and supporting the improvement of fuel quality of all vehicles to Euro VI levels.
