About the Role

The Climate Insights Unit at SSEF prioritizes policy-driven research, focusing on the interplay of emerging technologies, policy frameworks, and market dynamics to foster the adoption of low-carbon technologies in India. Our work emphasizes evaluating technological advancements and policy developments to shape an ecosystem conducive to sustainable, economic, ecological, and socially equitable growth. Our approach involves deep analysis, collaboration with domain experts, and generating actionable insights for policy actors and philanthropic strategy formulation. This nuanced understanding helps in identifying strategic opportunities for impactful climate action and investment in India. The research function will encompass the following key areas:

  • Technology Opportunity: Pinpointing breakthrough low-carbon technologies poised for significant emissions reductions.
  • Policy Innovation: Crafting and evaluating forward-thinking policy initiatives that incentivize the manufacture and adoption of clean technologies.

The “Senior Manager / Associate Director (Research)” in the Climate Insights Unit holds a senior leadership position responsible for setting the strategic direction of research projects and initiatives. Reporting directly to the Director of the Climate Insights Unit, this role involves high-level planning, coordination, and execution of research activities that advance the unit’s mission. The Associate Director will also be instrumental in establishing research standards and procedures, building, and managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and academic partners, to amplify the impact of the unit’s research. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience in climate and public policy research, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement, with a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable and just approach to addressing climate change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design research strategy and identify new research products.
  • Design, oversee and manage research projects from conception to completion, ensuring research quality and relevance to climate and developmental objectives.
  • Build expertise in energy and emission modelling.
  • Develop and manage research protocols for inhouse research.
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders to inform program research efforts.
  • Produce and lead development of reports, briefs, op-eds, and other content.
  • Identify and craft compelling narratives around research findings.
  • Represent Shakti in internal and external forums, to share research findings.

Selection Criteria


  • PhD or Postgraduate degree or equivalent in public policy, economics, or related stream from a premium university / institute.

Work Experience

  • For Senior Manager (Research) – 7+ years, and
  • For Associate Director (Research) – 10+ years of relevant research experience in the areas of energy, environment, sustainable development, and climate mitigation is essential.


  • Knowledge of energy policies, regulations, and programmes at international, national, state and city levels.
  • Prior experience designing research projects, undertaking data collection and analysis, facilitating consultations, managing researchers, and publishing research outputs.
  • Extensive experience in publishing research products, utilising a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Proficiency with statistical and research tools like SPSS, R, and Python.
  • Excellent critical and analytical thinking abilities.
  • Willingness to explore new areas of research and adopt new analytical frames.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Superior teamworking and collaborating skills.
  • Drive to achieve high-quality outputs, ownership of delegated responsibilities and commitment to deliver on time.
