India’s transport sector is a heavy consumer of petroleum products. It contributed to around 10% of total GHG emissions including Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) in 2010. Around 13% of energy-based emissions are attributed to the transport sector, based on the estimates published in India’s Biennial Update Report. Emissions in the transport sector can be disaggregated into four divisions based on the mode of transport – Road, Railways, Aviation and Water Navigation. Amongst these modes, road transport dominates the share of emissions.
