Stakeholders’ Consultation on ‘Electrification of Vehicles in the Dairy Industry’

Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, as a knowledge partner, supported Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI), in the Stakeholder Consultation, ‘Electrification of Vehicles in the Dairy Industry,’ on July 30, 2024. This collaborative effort explored the feasibility and benefits of transitioning dairy transportation to electric vehicles (EVs). GERMI, leveraged its expertise in energy research and sustainable development,  examining this transition’s economic, environmental, and operational impacts. Key areas of focus included energy consumption, infrastructure requirements, cost-effectiveness, and the overall effect on carbon emissions associated with dairy logistics.

Priti Shukla, Programme Manager, Electric Mobility, Shakti, presented on ‘Freight Decarbonisation: Efforts and Journey So Far,’ showcasing the strides in decarbonising medium and heavy-duty freight where she said, “This journey underscores our collaborative efforts at both national and sub-national levels, encompassing policy frameworks and pilot projects. Together, we’re steering towards a sustainable future in transportation.”

Further, the discussion also centred around reducing global carbon emissions as one of the crucial objectives. The transportation sector can be a significant contributor to the reduction of these emissions. Electrifying vehicles in industries such as the dairy industry holds promise for achieving substantial reductions in emissions. Dairy industries can effectively lower their carbon footprint by shifting from conventional fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). This transition can reduce direct emissions from vehicle exhaust and support broader environmental goals by encouraging cleaner energy practices and reducing reliance on non-renewable resources.

Through extensive research and collaboration with industry stakeholders, GERMI is dedicated to offering valuable insights that will inform future policy decisions and technological advancements. Fostering sustainable transportation solutions within the dairy sector is an important objective of this commitment.
