Sustainable Transition for Future-Ready Jharkhand

On February 14-15, 2024, the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition in collaboration with Government of Jharkhand, Center for Environment and Energy Development (CEED), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organised an international conference on “Sustainable Transition for Future-Ready Jharkhand”. The conference brought together a variety of stakeholders including government officials, policymakers, researchers, academia, representatives from donor agencies, CSOs, and others at the international and national levels.

Anuradha Saigal, Programme Manager, Climate Policy, Shakti, participated in a session on ‘Sustainable Energy Transitions: Envisaging the Strategic Shift to meet Climate & Net Zero Goals.’

The key theme of the conference revolved around the idea of incorporating global insights and fostering the exchange of knowledge to bolster Jharkhand’s resilience to climate challenges in the years ahead. Given its status as a significant coal-producing state, Jharkhand holds a pivotal role in India’s transition towards sustainable energy, essential for achieving both its NDCs and broader global climate objectives.

The conference encompassed a diverse number of sessions, including plenaries focused on tracking progress towards climate objectives and showcasing exemplary practices from both the global North and South. In addition, numerous panel discussions exploring various pertinent topics such as sustainable energy transitions, socially inclusive livelihood strategies, equitable and just transitions, and the intricate pathways toward a climate-resilient future also took place. These sessions served as platforms for in-depth deliberations, fostering dialogue, and sharing of innovative solutions.
