India’s rising population coupled with rapid urbanization will augment the demand for newer buildings in the country. According to estimates, India’s building sector is forecasted to grow fivefold from 2005-30. This will translate into creating a similar sectoral energy demand which currently accounts for almost 33% of total energy consumption in India. To tackle this emerging challenge, India has rolled out programmes aimed at promoting energy efficiency and energy conservation in this sector. But several challenges need to be addressed in terms of knowledge gap among stakeholders, lack of sufficient buildings energy data, inadequate research studies, dearth of technical expertise among key stakeholders and flawed consumer practices. Recognizing this, Shakti has supported efforts to find solutions for some of these challenges.
