Uttar Pradesh has the largest population, the largest number of households added under the Saubhagya scheme, and the highest commitment to reforms under the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY), and, therefore, the greatest need to address losses incurred by distribution companies (discoms). But discoms in Uttar Pradesh have persistently been faring poorly facing large annual losses while being unable to meet the state’s increasing electricity demand. The lack of data and reliable information on ground realities, performance benchmarks and other critical issues continue to hinder the ability of discoms to operate effectively or to improve their performance. One important way to bridge this gap is to through enhancing the engagement of civil society organizations to offer the necessary support to boost design and implementation capacity within the state. Shakti is supporting the Council on Energy, Environment and Water to engage with stakeholders and CSOs in Uttar Pradesh with the goal of finding pathways for a cleaner and more sustainable power sector.
