The State of Renewable Energy in India

In the last decade the renewable energy sector has made tremendous strides in the country, growing from a fringe player to a mainstream actor in the energy sector. Riding on a favourable policy environment and dipping prices, capacity and generation have grown. According to official estimates, India has hit 73 GW of installed RE power, which is around 20 per cent of the country’s installed capacity for power generation. The Government of India has an ambitious target for RE — 175 gigawatt (GW) by 2022. Nobody argues about the imperative or feasibility of renewable energy. But this success has thrown newer challenges, which need to be addressed.
